Girls varsity basketball player Mary-Lee Mitchell scores 1,000 points

Curtis had another basketball player who joined the 1000 point club this year. Junior starter Mary-Lee Mitchell scored her 1000 points on December 17th, against New Dorp High School. Within 10 seconds after opening tip-off she scored her thousandth points off a layup. All of her teammates rushed to tackle her and congratulate her as well as her aunts and family.

Mitchell had shoulder surgery back in March and yet, came back stronger than ever and ready to dominate for this upcoming season. Mitchell is a part of the Guerriero family, a household name at Curtis High School. Her Aunts Dot, Cindy, and Cathy all scored their 1000th points during their time at Curtis. Her mother Clare was a thousand point scorer as well and a strong player on the court. Last but not least, her older sister Clare although did not attend Curtis, scored 2,000 points in her high school career at Staten Island Academy. Every member of her family mentioned above attended D1 schools for basketball.

“I am truly blessed to have accomplished this in my basketball career, and join my family as well. Without the love and support of my family, friends, teammates and coaches believing in me this would have not been possibly. Reaching this achievement makes me want to work harder and be a better player and teammate on the court,” said Mitchell. Mary-Lee is also a nursing student and plays softball.
