Curtis High School held their open house on November 6th, as a way to showcase the school to prospective eighth graders who might want to become Warriors. A lot of students from Curtis volunteered to help answer questions for future students as well as give them tours of the building. A specific group of students were there as translators for students and parents who needed clarification in Spanish, Arabic and several other languages. If they had any questions Curtis High School students were there to help.
In Gym A there wherestations for IB, ROTC, nursing, visual arts and all the other programs available. Student translators were walking around with brightly colored shirts and pins written in the respective language that alerted people to the translation service available. After the gym the translators took families on tours and showed them around the building.
I myself proudly wore a button that said “Yo hablo español.” My experience at the open house was that I noticed many parents had questions about the programs offered here at Curtis and being a translator, I was able to answer questions and clarify things they had heard about the school. As a senior, helping the future students’ families is important so they can confidently make a choice in what high school they should attend.
Overall, this night was a success, with the translators helping to make a positive impression and to show the Warrior spirit.
