The Curtis Dance Company proudly displayed their hard work to the community on May 5th to 7th, with an array of dances in various styles. Each student expressed their creativity in their pieces, showing elements of their cultures, mentality, and spirituality while still presenting their intensive skill.
Preparations for the show began long before the show was even advertised. After all, creating a dance piece is very time consuming and cannot be rushed. On top of participating in the dances themselves, the students also choreographed the pieces, deciding how many people were in it and what exactly the piece was going to be about. After finishing that step, the students began to rehearse each piece, taking many, many attempts to perfect such complex routines.
When it was time for the show, everyone moved gracefully and elegantly throughout both nights, leaving the audience in awe. Every time the dancers performed an insane maneuver, every student in the audience went crazy cheering for their classmates.
Both nights of the Dance Show showed amazing amounts of variety, with pieces ranging from expressing one’s culture, to the pain of toxic relationships, to recreations of classic stories like Alice in Wonderland in the form of a ballet. Some Curtis alumni returned to choreograph their own pieces.
At the end of night, it was time for the senior students of the Dance Company to pass the torch on to the juniors with the final piece of the night. Seeing the passing of the torch is always very heartwarming and sad, as it signifies the end of the seniors’ careers at Curtis. It is now time for the juniors to step up and achieve greatness through their pieces. Curtis can be proud of all the wonderful dancers of Dance Company as the program continues to shine in the school.
