Homecoming, traditionally speaking, is a celebration, whether that be in regards to school spirit, an athletic victory, or just a night of fun. However, for the aforementioned celebrations to take place, a certain atmosphere is needed. The administration has rarely failed to provide this atmosphere in past years. However, this year it would seem as if inspiration itself laid its bony hand on the organizing staff’s shoulders. Mr. Cogan and OTHERS chose to put a new spin on a classic event, dubbing it “HOCO-WEEN”. When asked about the choice for the theme, Mr. Cogan said that “the timing just made sense”.
But the Halloween theme was not in name alone. The faculty challenged all attendees to come in their best and most creative costumes. And as a first hand witness, I, Benjamin Aina, can say that they did just that. Costumes ranged from superheroes, to TV characters, to characters from cartoons and anime. Nevertheless, some found the costume request too daunting and chose to come in regular clothes or to not come at all. All attendees had to be Curtis students or faculty, and were required to present their IDs upon entering
Despite the fresh theme, the attendance rate was much lower than past years. Odds are, this was due to a decline in public interest. When asked about this year’s homecoming, one student said that it was somewhat disappointing, critiquing the music and food choice. Not all students shared this sentiment, however. Some were more than satisfied with the night’s playlist and truly enjoyed the Halloween theme. All and all the 2024 HOCO-WEEN was, as it always is, a joyous event for many of the attendees and a wonderful display of creativity by the event planners.
HOCO-WEEN: A review by Benjamin Aina
Despite low attendance, HOCO-WEEN was an overall success.
