Sports teams share space with tenth period gym

Coaches and teachers make tight gym schedule work despite limited space.

Before this year, the only students with an assigned tenth period physical education class were football players who had a weight lifting gym. Now, other students have received a tenth period physical education class as well. In the beginning, the class was held in the girls gym.

Last year, the girls volleyball team began their practice period ten in the same space, utilizing  the volleyball nets. To help the volleyball team  the tenth period teachers moved the class down to the boys gym which was not being used.  Girls with tenth period gym have to share the locker rooms with the volleyball team.  The arrangement works except when it rains. When it rains the students have to move back up to the girls gym so that the boys football and soccer teams can practice. The girls volleyball team must postpone the start of their practice until after period 10.

Tenth period gym is also a co-ed gym class. According to Mr. Neglia this has an impact on how he  teaches the class. “It just changes the approach to planning a lesson. There are more factors.”

Hiba Aly, a Muslim student  describes how the  co-ed class affects her, “I can’t take off my hijab anymore during gym because it’s against my religion to have it off in front of boys.”

Linda Ahmed, a sophomore said, “Tenth  period gym is fun because it’s more like a free period instead of gym. I don’t mind that I have it with guys, it doesn’t really change anything.”
