Boys and girls soccer games take place on same day

Due to scheduling, the girls and boys soccer teams won’t be able to support each other during games.

This season both the boys and girls soccer teams are missing their greatest supporters. Last year, the teams were able to attend and cheer at each other’s matches. This season, the boys and girls soccer team will be playing all of their games on the same day at different locations with the exception that the boys will have one game on October 5th and the Girls will have their game on October 6th.

“The boys and the girls soccer program is a family, we have a strong support system and now we haven’t seen each other play a single game,” said Brean Mckeon, a senior who plays goalie and midfield for the girls team.

Maria Navarro a junior who plays forward and midfield, said, “I don’t enjoy the change because the girls can’t support the boys team during games.”

Beyond the support, the teams learn from each other. “I think for once we should be able to watch the sport, not only play it. It’s also a benefit because we can gain skills just by watching,” said Hawa James, a freshman who plays defense.

Mr. Tombo Berete, the boys soccer head coach, said, “I don’t like the change because it’s a problem. The teams want to support each other, but sadly they can’t. Last year, both teams had perfect attendance to each others’ games.”

Although there is a lot of negative opinions toward this change, there are people who do accept it. Raul Margarito, a sophomore who plays midfield said, “I support the change, because the whole team is concentrated on their games and not distracted by the girls.”
