School clean up helps community relations

School sponsored initiative benefits the neighborhood.

The first exterior community clean up took place on Thursday, March 19 after ninth and tenth period. The goal of the activity was to bring awareness to the importance of sustaining a clean and safe neighborhood in the Curtis community. 32 students who participated in the event were given three hours of community service.

Joe Sicilian, who organized the event, said, “We wanted to clean up the neighborhoods of Curtis because there is trash everywhere and our neighbors are not in favor of their property being covered in garbage. We do not want Curtis to earn a bad reputation, especially for littering.”

With the support of the track team, the S.O members, and other students who volunteered, Curtis was able to collect 32 bags of leaves, wrappers, soda cans, etc in one day.

“Cleaning up after ourselves brings awareness to the community and although we did clean up a great amount in the short time span, we did not have the number of volunteers that there could have been,” said Sicilian.

Because the Curtis community continues to litter, there needs to be more  students willing to clean up after themselves. Even if students are not excited about cleaning their neighborhoods, a motive could be the three hours of community service that are given for participating in the event.

Sicilian said, “We are holding another community service event each month. We want to spread the awareness of cleaning up our neighborhoods and hopefully this time, there will be more students who are ready to take the initiative to clean up.”
