Computer business Institute sponsors Hour of Code

Introduction to code inspires future computer science majors.

To  generate interest in computer science and programming The Hour of Code was a one-hour event sponsored by Code.org, Apple and Microsoft.

By participating in the event, 74 students learned how to code by seeing firsthand the steps used to create a computer program. The event took place on Thursday, December 11, 2014 in the library from 3:15 to 5:30.

Sarah Daghestani, an IB junior, was one of the students running the program, “Computer Science is essential in today’s technological world and I volunteered to run it to prove that anybody can code. The skills developed during the event can also become a huge help in everyday tasks,” said Daghestani.

The Hour of Code did not just give students the opportunity to learn the steps behind creating a computer program, but also helped them realize what it took to study computer science.

Aramide Dada, an IB junior, said, ¨I learned the basic steps in programming and it enhanced my ability to understand the tedious process a programmer goes through in order to make a game by starting from scratch.¨

While some students learned to code on their Chromebooks or on the computers in the library, other students sat with each other to work on coding while given snacks.

Dada said, ¨In addition to the fact that I was interested in programming, which is why I participated in the Hour of Code, I was also doing something that I really enjoyed. I also liked that I was able to learn how to program with my friends

At the event, students were also able to understand how animations were created and the process that is needed to move the animations. The event did not just enhance the students’ ability to code in the computer field, but also aided them in science and math related fields such as engineering.

¨I am glad that I took part in the event,” said Daghestani, “It made me realize what it took to create a program and I am pleased that I was one of the students who decided to run the event.”
