Engineering club engages aspiring builders

If infrastructure structure excites you than the Engineering and Technology Club, whose President and Vice-President respectively are Luis Gutierrez and Julia Luppino, with Mr. Rajswasser as the supervisor is for you.

In the Engineering and Technology Club, there are a variety of activities and projects for students to get involved in. One project was the egg drop experiment, where members of the club built protective cases to hold eggs and then  dropped them. Each member was given ten straws, 36 inches of tape, a pair of scissors, and one sheet of paper towel to build an egg holder.

When members were done building, they went outside to try out their designs. After each one was dropped from an elevation of the distance from Mr. Rajswasser’s out stretched hand standing on top of the flag pole bench. The club members recorded their data and wrote down how their designs could be improved. According to the president, Luis Gutierrez, future projects for the club include building kites and bridges.

In addition to doing science experiments, the club offers opportunities to learn about the various fields of engineering such as mechanical, chemical, civil, or biomedical.

Gutierrez said, “I wanted to start this club in order to get the students at Curtis involved in engineering and technology, since they are essential to future generations.”

The club is still in its early stages, but by the beginning of the 2013-2014 school year it should be in full swing. Gutierrez also added that in September, he would like to expand the club and get more people to join, especially incoming freshmen.
