Science classes unhappy about move to new wing

Relocation cause problems for teachers and students.

Have you ever mindlessly made your way to your science class and discovered it was empty? Did you then mentally facepalm yourself because you forgot you were supposed to be in the lab? Don’t worry, you’re not alone. 8/10 students say this happens to them frequently. You probably won’t think much of it though right? Just walk a couple rooms down and there’s your class. Not for Ms. Jackson’s IB Physics class, however. Located in the new building, the students have to make the walk to the old wing at least once a week for a lab.

“It’s so annoying,” said senior, Sarah Landowne, the testament echoed by her peers. Landown is particularly upset because she had a sprained ankle and had to limp her way to the lab, being late and missing the instruction.

However, Ms. Jackson’s problem isn’t with her students being late. “Science should be taught in the science hallway,” she fervently states. She goes on to tell that sometimes she is doing a demonstration and she needs to grab something from the lab real quick. Yeah, that’s not going to happen if the lab is all the way on the other side of the school. She can’t bring it over with her either, on the account that other teachers may need it too. “The materials are shared by everyone, who am I to take it? Not only is it heavy, it’s unfair.”

Ms. Holzer is passionate about this issue as well. “Science has been taught on the second floor of the old wing for over thirty years with no problem. Why change it now?”

Don’t just brush Ms. Jackson’s pleas off, she understands why she was placed in the new wing; It’s to alleviate traffic. Everyone agrees that the hallways of Curtis are extremely crowded, but Ms. Jackson does not think this is the solution. She thinks to help with this issue, science classes should be either taught in the beginning or end of the day. “It’ll need a whole bunch of planning, but science should be taught in the science hallway… no matter how nice the new wing is.”
