Boys and Girls Bowling
The bowling teams have had a tough season with both teams having for wins and six losses so far. The boys started off the season with a loss against Tottenville 0-3, but the girls had a stronger start with 2-1 against Susan Wagner. Both of the teams are fifth in PSAL standings. Alex Cruz and Rosanna Thomson lead their teams.
Boys and Girls Cross Country
The boys cross country team started off strong with top players Tyler Lee, Preston Chin, Dominick Piervenanzi, and Marcos Penaranda getting points for the team. Trevor Gibson, Harold Ortega and Gavin Henderson also show a lot of potential. Like the boys, the girls cross country team has just three meets left in the season. The girls started off strong this year with a roster full of both new and experienced runners. Senior and team captain Juliana Apreza, as well as Mercedes Johnson, are experienced runners that lead the team. Melek Celebioglu, Kelly Mendoza, and Sokhna Ndiaye and Co-captain Veronica Wilson also fill out the team. Because of the robust roster, the team could go far.
Football
The boys varsity football team has a winning streak of five games in PSAL, starting off their season beating Abraham Lincoln High School 14-6. The team is ranked second, having 743 power points, right behind Tottenville. Their main focus is on winning the PSAL championship the second year in a row. The star players are Jayden Melendez, who’s scored five touchdowns and quarter back Vincent Canzoneri. On defense Jarrett Serate, Akai Lewis Danny Lewis are key players. As a team, they want to keep up their performance and their winning streak.
Boys and Girls Soccer
Both the boys and girls soccer teams have had their own notable successes this season, with the girls team only losing four games so far, and the boys team tying with New Dorp High School 3-3 recently. Right now they are second in the division with a 6-2-2 record. The top players on the boys team are Joshua Howard, and Joshua Cadeno and Cristian Gaiten. Alongside them are some new recruits that have impacted the game. Thomas Bishop in defense and Sadio Ba on the attack. Moreover, top players in the girls soccer team include Camille Banks and Isabella Cilli, along with striker Liazia Tolbert Francis. Julia Surat, Samaria Gordon, Julissa Ortega, Savannah Vanditto, and Sasha Tolbert-Francis have shown a lot of potential.
Girls Swimming
The girls team finished the season with four wins under their belt. The team hopes to have as a lot of swimmers qualify for A champs. Gabriella Rojas, Shyann Henry, Valeria Diaz Fabian, and Kathryn Karounos are top swimmers. This year, the team has a lot of swimmers with potential that are new to competitive swimming.
Girls Tennis
The girls tennis team is 5-5. The girls had enough wins to make the playoffs. The number one singles player is Junior Nina Benedetto and the number two slot is filled by freshman Alina Starodubenko. However, Alina suffered a season ending injury last week. Sophomore Adrianna Sullivan is an excellent player who has the potential to challenge Alina and Nina for their singles spot. Junior Destinie Mills also has potential. She works hard and has a solid stroke.
Girls Volleyball
The girls volleyball team is in fifth place, with 1 game left until the end of the season. Both varsity and junior varsity teams have high hopes for making it to playoffs. “It all comes down to the last game,” said Coach Barone. “Our goal every year is to make it to playoffs.” Miriam Heath is fifth on the Island in service points, and seventh in digs. Skyla Gomez, is fourth on the Island in digs. Madeline Gambardella is sixth on the island for service points and eighth for aces. A few up-and-coming athletes are Hailey Moore, Adelyn Thaisz, and Lillyann Letona.
