Boys Cross Country wins Sophomore Championship

Boys cross country team’s focus on developing young talent pays off with a first place finish.

This year Curtis boys cross country won first place in the Cross Country Sophomore City Championships on November first. The race took place at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx. In second place came Brooklyn Tech and in third was The Bronx High School of Science. The runners in the race were sophomores Juan Cortes, Justin Strandberg, Jonathan Strandberg, Matthew Chakwin, Juan Viruel, Zachary Henriquez and Dustin Franco.

Franco came in first with a time of 14 minutes 37 seconds, Jonathan Strandberg followed with 14 minutes 50 seconds, and Justin Strandberg came in with 14 minutes 52 seconds.

Coach Pierce, one of the team’s coaches said, “We are a very young team and are just taking it one race at a time.”

Coach Banks said, “This year the team has been led by sophomores. We have been focusing on development and progress. I hope the boys come into indoor with the same level of commitment and to continue improving. We have a young team and we’re only getting better.” The team wishes to hold onto the title next year at City Varsity Champs.
