Girls JV basketball team wins PSAL championship

The JV Girls Basketball team wins the PSAL championship for the second year in a row.

The clock was tick- ing, the Lady Warriors were on the brink of winning the Junior Varsity PSAL Championship for basketball, and it all came down to how they played in the last quarter. On Friday March 14th, 2014, the Lady Warriors took home the championship with a score of 43-35 under the coaching Donna Barone. Curtis High School faced off against South Shore High School at the Metropoli- tan Campus high school’s gym that night. It was blatant that the Lady Warriors were play- ing to win, with freshmen Tif- fany Parish scoring fourteen points and Joan Walsh Lopes scoring ten points. “I was so happy and excited! I felt like I gave it my all and I am glad we got this victory; it was definitely a team effort,” said

Kayla Russell, who also is a freshman, said, “My team played very well. I think I could have done better because I missed some shots, but we won so I’m still extremely happy.”

The Staten Island Advance reported that the Warriors trailed 18-16 at the half time, but Parrish’s five third-quarter points helped them outscore the Vikings 12-6 in that period and they never looked back. Shantasia Jeffrey added seven points, four steals and three blocks while Saman- tha Boyer turned in a strong defensive game for the War- riors with nine steals and five rebounds. The Lady Warriors dominated throughout most of the match and even for most of the season, winning twelve out of thirteen games. Coach Barone said, “The great lead- ership of our sophomores, Sa- mantha Boyer, Vassageia Wat- son, Zaria Crawford, Amanda Neenan and Imani Allums, who were members of last

year’s championship team, helped guide us back there.” This is not Coach Barone’s first year coaching a junior varsity team, but it is her first year coaching jv bas- ketball. “It is a GREAT feeling

winning a championship in the first year that you coach that sport. However, I can’t take all the credit for the win. My team deserves all the credit for this championship because they ALL worked hard both on and

off the court to get there,” said Coach Barone. The Lady War- riors brought home the cham- pionship, with their heads held high and their sights set on next year’s championship.
