The George Vinet Swim-a-thon is an event aimed to raise funds for brain cancer research in honor of former boys swim coach, George Vinet, who was diagnosed with brain cancer nearly eight years ago. The seventh annual George Vinet Swim-a-thon was held in the Curtis pool on Saturday, January 31 from 12-4 p.m. The event first began in 2009, when then swim captain Michael Caputo organized the swim-a-thon. This year, the event continued with people from different high schools and several Curtis alumni swimming laps. Swimmers and spectators donated money at the event.

Senior Jessica Ruiz, who swam, said she feels “awesome” about participated. “It’s an amazing way to raise money, not your typical marathon,” said Ruiz. “I like being there with other swimmers and raising money for an amazing missed coach!”

A group of seniors, including Anvitha Bollarpanda, Citlali Camacho, Kailey Walters, and Chynna Lake headed the swim-a-thon. They staffed the refreshments table set up near the pool as hungry swimmers bought snacks and baked goods after completing their laps. Both before and after the actual event, they also sold water bottles and collected donations from a number of Curtis faculty, administration, and students. Ms. Newman helped organize the event as well by putting up a poster to spread the word and asking for donations.

In total, over $800 were raised to be donated to the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
