The annual Club Rush is an important event that helps students connect with the myriad clubs available at Curtis. This year, the event was held on Thursday, October 2nd in the student cafeteria after school. The cafeteria quickly filled up with eager students within the very first minutes of the event. While some enthusiastically campaigned for their respective clubs, others walked around, getting a taste for what Curtis had to offer. While Spanish teacher and audio tech Mr. Richard Burton handled the music, Mr. Cogan emceed the event. There were at least 600 people in attendance, if the ice cream sandwiches are any indication. The school had ordered 500 for attendees, and ran out about an hour into the event.
Many club leaders feel that Club Rush is a great opportunity to provide students with the resources they need. Katerine Avia and Rafi Uddin, leaders of the new Peer-to-Peer Tutoring group and students in the IBDP, expressed this sentiment. Their club allows students to help other students with schoolwork that they’re struggling with. “We started this recently,” Katerine explained, “We started noticing freshman failing algebra, and not a lot of teachers helping them.” Ms. Zimmerman, the supervisor for My Sister’s Keeper Club, expressed a similar sentiment. She feels that her club meets a need that the school curriculum does not. “I want this club to help all girls to be confident and to know their worth. We have a lot of career opportunities also,” said Zimmerman. Clubs like UNICEF, My Brother’s Keeper, Student Mentoring, Debate, Math Team, Book Club, Next-Gen Educators, and Nursing aim to fill needs too.
Club Rush continues to be a great opportunity for clubs to pull in new members. The idea has grown in popularity since its advent in 2016, and especially after its return post-Covid. While also supplementing the academic opportunities at Curtis, it also prompts connections between students. “I feel like I did get something good out of Club Rush,” said IBDP Sophomore Lyric Nonnon, who stayed for all two hours of the event. “It’s nice to have a club for a little niche, something specific.”
