Curtis has entered a new chapter in student media thanks to students Daniel Neumann and Tyler Lee, who created and now run the school’s live sports broadcasts, called Curtis High School TV.
What began as Lee’s idea quickly turned into a team effort, with Neumann taking on much of the technical setup and equipment work. Their efforts were supported by new teacher Ms. Klingler and Assistant Principal Mr. Gambardella. Klingler helped the students learn filming, commentary, and production skills while Gambardella ensured they had a professional set up with all the proper equipment.
Their first live broadcast took place on October 17 during the boys’ senior night soccer game against Tottenville. Although the pair faced early audio difficulties and some nervousness, they fixed the issues and delivered a smooth and successful show. Their second broadcast—the football game against Dewitt Clinton High School —drew 50 viewers, showing growing interest from the school community.
“The best part of the project is watching the games from the broadcast booth. I Iove to make commentary of the games, especially knowing that someone is listening,” said Neumann.
Lee and Neumann manage every part of the operation themselves, including filming, commentary, and troubleshooting. They’ve already covered soccer and football and are planning to expand into winter basketball as that season approaches.
“I am very impressed with their ambition and their follow through and impressed at the quality of the broadcasts. With each event, their coverage gets better and better,” said Klingler.
