The girls wrestling team has ended the year with an incredible finish. After wiping the floor with Madison, Bryant, and Flushing, the girls made their way to the playoffs. On Saturday, May 10th, at Grover Cleveland, the Warriors carved their way through the opposition. They were determined to take home the title after suffering a huge loss to Truman last year. Students Reagan Maldonado and Kiara Ramirez, as well as Tottenville players Maddalena Moog and Jasmine Karkis, allowed the team to keep their eyes on the prize.
“A big part of our mental preparation was checking our ego,” said Coach Carlos Banegas. “We knew Truman was the team to beat, and we knew we’d be tested.”
In the quarter-finals, the Warriors beat Grover Cleveland by a landslide 50-15. They barely slowed in the semi-finals, winning 45-25 against Brooklyn Tech.
The match came down to the final, heavyweight bout. In the end, Petrides sophomore Daphne Appiah, secured the pin and with it a 34-30 championship victory.
With the victory, the Warriors finished their season with a perfect 11-0 in dual-meet competitions.
Long-time Coach Alena recalls the match, “It was a crazy match, back and forth, it came down to the last bout, and the girls pulled it off.”
