Seniors, you’ve finally made it. I want to start by first congratulating each of you for making it to the end of your high school journey. As you read this, I am 115 miles away navigating my college campus, continuing my academic journey. I want you all to relish your first moments as seniors – this will undoubtedly be the most pivotal time of your high school career. But you will also face many unavoidable challenges, and I know more than anyone how much Warriors love to take shortcuts. Senior year is not the time for shortcuts, though. In fact, every moment counts. So with this, I leave you (for the final time) with advice to help you along your way.
Firstly, it is crucial that you stay on track. As you approach graduation, school will start to feel more and more like a vacation. Yes, you are seniors, but you are students first. Hold yourselves accountable, and remember what it took for you to make it this far.
College application season will be one of the most challenging times of the year, but only if you make it. Be strategic with your applications. Over applying to schools is all too real. It is also important to be conscious of your finances: will you need to apply for scholarships? Do you expect to receive a lot of aid? Contact schools about your financial situation sooner than later, and apply to scholarships now.
Do not hold yourself back from having fun when things get stressful. Senior year certainly isn’t a party, but it also isn’t a prison. Go to that football game with your friends, take that late night drive, be spontaneous for a day. Your year will only be as fun as you make it. Finding your work-life balance won’t be easy, but it is necessary.
Finally, get involved. It might seem redundant, considering you only have 10 months left, but it’s worth it. It’s never too late to meet new people and make new connections. Been eyeing a club for a while? Join it! Interested in running? Hop on the track. You can achieve anything if you’re determined. I hope you all see the value and sincerity in my words, and most importantly, I hope you all enjoy your final year of high school.
Onwards and upwards.
