On May 27th, Curtis proudly welcomed New York City Council Member Kamillah Hanks for the unveiling of a powerful new mural titled “I am because we are.” Created by Curtis alumni and art teacher Ms. Samantha Zuaro. The mural celebrates identity, unity, and the strength of community—values that reflect the heart of the Curtis experience.
Council Member Hanks addressed the crowd of students, staff, and alumni with a message of hope and togetherness. “This mural is more than just art—it’s a statement,” she said. “It reminds us that we are all connected, and we become stronger when we lift each other up.”
During the event, Principal Jaenicke highlighted the importance of community, especially in light of the recent loss of beloved staff member Kurt Yorke. His memory served as a powerful reminder of the bonds shared within the Curtis family. The mural now stands as a lasting symbol of collective strength, resilience, and the enduring Curtis spirit.
