Narcan is an important medicine that can be administered via nasal spray in order to rapidly reverse an opioid overdose. On Wednesday, April 23rd, students were trained on the usage of this medication. The training was held in the library, with 21 students in attendance. Students were able to sign up through a QR code on the school’s Instagram, while other students joined as an extension of Link Crew.
This was the first student-focused Narcan training from the TYSA program. Their training was done in efforts to increase student awareness of the dangers in opioid use. On top of awareness, they want students to be prepared to help if they encounter an overdose.
In the training, students and staff were taught how to identify an overdose, and the procedure to administer Narcan to ensure the safety of the victim. More specifically, they were taught the proper resting position, referred to as a rescue pose, They were instructed to call 911 and give rescue breaths. Due to DOE regulations, kits for administration weren’t provided to minors. However, students were provided with the information to get the materials from TYSA directly. The organization happens to be conveniently close to the school, just one block away, which makes these kits very accessible.
