The Curtis Dance Company performed their annual dance show on May 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, the culmination of months of work. Some fan favorites included numbers like “Footloose”, “Body”, “I Hope I Get It”, and several other pieces produced by the student dancers.
Putting together a production is no small task. In this event alone, there were 124 dancers, three student technicians, and two teachers. This is the most dance participants that the company has ever had, in part due to the new dance teacher, Ms. Harper. All in all, there were 25 pieces, showcased over two nights, with most of them being choreographed by students. One dance was choreographed by The Battey Dance Company, who has partnered with Curtis for the last 15 years. Two other pieces were choreographed by Curtis alumni.
The show featured one dance, choreographed by IBDP Senior Chizieere Camara, called “Bound by Choice.” It revolved around the concept of arranged marriages and the aspects of such a life. The dance in question was performed to the song “Videogames” by Lana Del Ray. “I chose this because I always thought marriage was a beautiful creation, but I realized the negative part of it. Not many people can have that experience when they get forced into it,” Camara explained. Camara described the show as very well organized and she was glad to be a part of it.
Abby Ongteco, another senior who choreographed and performed in her own duet, explained her artistic intentions. “To put it simply, it fits us. Me and Karolina dance very differently and that creates something beautiful. It’s pretty to look at.” She also stated that they had practice one to two times a week for about two months. Karolina Maksymowicz, the other dancer involved, added that the dance Company helps everyone grow. It’s nice to see everyone perform at their best ability.
