The Curtis Knitting Club recently took a trip to Public School 78, where nine students visited the school’s crochet club. Chaperoned by Ms. Russo and Ms. Sciortino, the visit wasn’t about teaching, but about sharing and celebrating fiber arts. The idea came from P.S. 78’s crochet club advisor, Rebecca Lugo, who reached out to Curtis during the preemie hat drive. Many personal ties made the visit even more meaningful—Latifa Labdouni had Ms. Lugo as her science teacher, Azuriah Batts’ mother works at PS 78 and is a Curtis alum, and Ms. Russo even taught Azuriah’s mother French.
The students were warmly welcomed and deeply impressed by the P.S. 78 crocheters, some of whom were working on advanced projects like sweaters. One student made her way around the room to personally greet everyone and ask about their creations, while others proudly shared hugs and stories.
“Visiting P.S. 78 was such an amazing experience!” said Latifa. “All of the students we met were so excited to meet us… I would love to do something like that again in the future!” The Curtis Knitting Club hopes to continue this collaboration next year, possibly working on a joint project like a blanket made of individual squares. One of the most memorable moments was when a P.S. 78 student asked if the Curtis group would be returning the following week — a heartwarming sign that the visit was a true success.
