On Friday, October 7th, 2022, people gathered at Curtis High School’s athletic field for the reveal of the new scoreboard and the naming of the athletic complex. The complex is now named the Charles Williams Athletic Complex, after the first black high school football coach on the Island.

Prior to the Curtis v. Midwood  football game, chairs were set up facing the scoreboard  for  friends, colleagues, and former student athletes.  A ceremony, opened by Principal Gregory Jaenickie was held in honor of the naming of the athletic complex. It featured various individuals who spoke about their experiences with Williams.

Mr. Williams was the a physical education teacher at Curtis for 28 years. Eventually, he became the head coach of the varsity football team after serving as assistant coach under Andy Barberi.

To further honor Mr. Williams, it was declared that October 7th would be “Charles Williams Day.” Though they were not present at the ceremony, it was recognized and agreed upon by Mayor Eric Adams and Borough President Vito Fossella.
