First football game this year honors Miles Kirkland

Football team dedicates first win to fallen Warrior.

The stands were packed on September 6th, as friends, family and fellow Warriors gathered to celebrate not only the varsity football team’s season opener, but the life of fallen Warrior Miles Kirkland.

Sixteen year-old Miles Kirkland tragically died after he collapsed during a football practice, ending his football career before it could begin. However, the varsity football team knew his presence on the team was stronger than ever.

“This game is for Miles, this whole season is for Miles,” said freshman team member Joseph Marizaldek. Not only did the football team have to prepare for their upcoming game physically, but mentally as well.

The Warriors knew this important game would set the tone for their upcoming season.  Members of the students and staff filled the stands to support the Warriors’ in their competition against Fort Hamilton as well as to comfort the friends and family who suffered the loss of Kirkland.

Many alumni also attended the game to support the Warrior family.  From face paint to helmet decals, “RIP MKT” and #54 were everywhere.

Dr. Curtis began with opening remarks thanking the crowd and said, “We are saddened by the loss, but we know that the spirit of that great Warrior will be with this team- and every other Warrior- throughout this season and the seasons to come.”

Heartfelt tears were shed by teammates, coaches, and fans.  Before the kick off, Senior Captains Isaiah Robinson, Maliek Kelly, Marcus Feyjoo, and Marcus Heffran carried out Miles’  #54 jersey to the coin toss.  As emotions were running high the Warriors knew they had to come out on fire, and they did. After a hard fight, the Warriors reached victory ending the game with a 12-6 win over Fort Hamilton.

Fans and teammates celebrated the win. With Mile’s jersey painted on the Curtis field and his glowing personality forever in the hearts of his teammates, Miles Kirkland will never be forgotten as he will go down in Warrior history for defending the castle.
