Lacrosse girls fall one goal short of PSAL Championship

Girls lacrosse missed PSAL Championship by one game.

If not for Tottenville, the girls would be holding a trophy as PSAL Champions.  Both in the regular season and in the championship the girls lost to their arch rival by one goal.

Many came to support the team during that Tottenville game, including the  Girls JV Lacrosse team. The game was tied by the second half, but with just the 40 seconds left in “Sudden Death”, the Tottenville team scored the winning goal, making the score 13 to 14.

When they faced Tottenville again for the championship, the game was intense.  After the first half the teams were tied.  The second half Totenville inched ahead by one in the last three minutes. Although Curtis defense tried to regain possession they were  unable to answer Tottenville’s last goal.

Sophomore Lule Karpuzi agreed with Restrepo that the hardest and most intense game this year was with Tottenville. “We put up a fight against them and we played our hearts out,” she said.

A sophomore whose talent, skill, and love for the game was recognized early, Karpuzi has been on the varsity team since freshman year and expressed that the team, along with some great improvements, has had a great season. She said, “We really worked as a team this year.”

The Girls Varsity Lacrosse team has had a great start to the season, being in first place with 11 wins and only two losses.

Nora Restrepo, a senior who has been on the varsity team for three years, expressed that this season has improved the team’s relationship.  “This season we were able to trust each other more and we were able to play well together,” she said.

When asked about Coach Gonzalez, Karpuzi joked, “Gonzo is a very funny man with a blonde ponytail.” In actuality, Coach Matt Gonzalez has been a great trainer and aid of the team. With the drills, practices, and training he puts the girls through, his leadership and their hard work is truly evident in their game play and mindset. Gonzalez has been coaching the varsity girls lacrosse team since 2006 along with the varsity girls bowling team since 2011. It all started when he used to coach the boys lacrosse team, but later became the girls’ coach when the girls wanted to start their own team. Coach Gonzalez admits that the most challenging game was the senior day or home game with Midwood on May 7th. It was a tough game, but Mia Wilson scored the final and winning goal, allowing Curtis to win 16 to 15.

Carla Sigonla, who played on the Girls Varsity Lacrosse team when she attended Curtis,  is now the girls’ assistant coach and helps the team polish their skills and improve their technique and game play. Sigonla also assists the JV team with their shots, ground balls, passing, catching, and team work.
