Boys varsity lacrosse makes it to championship

The boys varsity lacrosse dominates the bowl division of PSAL.

It’s a cold March afternoon, on the field at Curtis High School and  young men is are doing drills and  skill training sets.  Many wonder how they have the willpower to be on the field it such bad weatehr. it is because they have some serious goals,  to win and get into the Championship. These are the members of the varsity lacrosse team and they were ready to fight, even if it ttooks  days of training, sweat, blood, and tears.  Thy wre deteremined tomake it to the final.

What distinguished this season from previous seasons was more skilled players and dedication and hard work from the entire team.  These artibutes lead them to an excellent 12:4 winning record and an undefeated junior varsity. “The highlight of the season was making it into the championship game and having players become All-Stars and MVP’s,” said Coach Barrett. These students are Brandon Antoine and Michael Ravelo.

With a 13-7 semifinal win over Port Richmond the Curtis Lacrosse team advanced to the PSAL championship.“My goal was to get into the Championship and win”, said  junior Jim Estioco,. The team made it to the finals but lost 7-8 to Frederick Douglass.   What the team lacked on Sunday, May 19, 2013 was speed and a quick start.   According to Mr.Barret,“I am upset we lost the Championship but overall it was a good season,” said Coach Barrett. “No matter win or lose we made it farther than we ever expected and we came out of the finals with our heads held high knowing we earned respect,” stated senior Naflan Doole.

Junior Adesola Belo said, “Winning our last game of the season and being the top seed in our division are the most memorable events in the season.”

Although the Varsity Lacrosse team did get into the Championship this year, there are many things the team can improve on. After the semi-final game with Port Richmond coach Paul Barrett told his team that he noticed a weakness in fundamentals. Junior Adesola Belo understands this weakness and thinks that he can most improve the basics and that the members of the team need more team goals and less one on one goals. Coach Paul Barrett expects another great season in 2014 and hopes to see his team in the finals again.
