Whole school reads same books

For the first time, every student had the same summer reading assignment.

For the summer reading project this year, each student had to read How to Read Literature Like a Professor by Thomas C. Foster and An Invisible Thread by Laura Schroff and Alex Tresniowski.

“The reason I chose a new set of books is so every student gets the chance to read different books. Also, I wanted every student to read An Invisible Thread, as it shows that acts of kindness can change someone’s life,” said Mr. DeConzo, the Assistant Principal of English.

An Invisible Thread is based on true events and tells the story of a woman named Laura who meets an 11-year old boy named Maurice in need of help.

Kiana Cucchiara, a sophomore, said, “An Invisible Thread was really inspiring and I hoped it changed students at Curtis’s viewpoint of taking the little things in life for granted. I know it helped me appreciate the little things in life.”

How to Read Literature Like a Professor, a book of literary guidelines, was also assigned. Each chapter discussed one component needed to read for deeper understanding The book included topics on quests, communion, the Bible, Shakespeare, symbols, and how they are relevant to the literature we read.

Ms. Pillarella, an English teacher, said, “It is a really educational book, and I really loved the chapters about quest and symbols. It really gives the background how to understand how an author develops a story.”

Mr. DeConzo said, “If any student really liked a book they have read, please let me know. You never know if it might come up on the summer reading list next year!”
