Record number of Warriors March to save babies

With close to a hundred students and staff Curtis represented true Warrior spirit.

The March of Dimes is a non-profit organization established on January 3, 1938, by former president Franklin D. Roosevelt. The organization seeks to improve the lives of babies who were born prematurely, as well as the mothers who gave birth to them. Millions of people today support the ideals of this organization and do so much to raise money, awareness, and show support. The “March for Babies” is a big event that people from all over come together to show their support and raise awareness as well as money.

Marcus Weiss said, “This is a cause that is so worth putting time into. Helping to raise money and walk is just a little part of the bigger scheme for March of Dimes. They really care, and want to help, so I’m glad to do it.” Weiss himself went around and asked for donations to raise money.

The walk took place on April 26th at 9:30am at the Staten Island Mall near the Sears entrance. After years of Curtis being one of the only Staten Island schools not having a big part in the walk, Curtis had the highest attendance with 96 Curtis students and staff participating. A lot of students got to the walk at 7 a.m to help set up and get everything ready.

The event was mor than walking; there were many different activities such as dancing, Zumba from the YMCA, and people who shared their experiences.

After the walk Somia Ali said, “It was truly a great experience, everyone had such a positive attitude. It was amazing seeing everyone together smiling and laughing while helping babies in need. Especially in this generation, we don’t get to see that too often. It was like a great big family barbeque. I will definitely do it again next year!”

When the walk came to an end, many people gathered in the mall parking lot to socialize, eat food, and dance. The walk turned out to be such a great success and the turnout Curtis had was one it has not seen in a while.
