Curtis High School’s first swim club is the brainchild of sophomore Michael Sorenson. A member of the boys swim team, Sorenson said, “I was motivated to get our swim teams at Curtis the needed practice in order to compete with the better swim teams on the island.” The club differs from swim teams of the regular PSAL season as it is not an actual team and will not compete against other schools. Also, anyone can join – from the seasoned swimmer to the beginner. The club will meet every Thursday from 3:00 – 5:00 pm.

With 25 people already signed up, membership for the swim club looks promising. “It is a lot of fun and it helped improve my swimming skills. It was a new experience because I had never been in the Curtis pool before. I also made new friends,” said sophomore Kaythari Maw.         Sorenson has big plans for the swim club. He thinks it would be a good idea to open the Curtis pool to the community on weekends, so that students can earn community service hours by teaching people how to swim. Ms. Boylan, the club’s advisor, also hopes to help certify people as lifeguards. Sorenson sees this as an asset to the club because it will allow Curtis students to become certified and get summer lifeguarding jobs.

“I hope to accomplish these goals as well as improve the swim teams at Curtis and teach those interested in learning to swim, how to swim,” said Sorenson. “I hope through our efforts all of the members of the club can personally benefit and achieve what they want from joining the club.”
