Dive into the season

With four wins for the season the boys look to build for next year.

boys swimmingOne of the  few winter sports is boys’ swimming. With a squad of 17 athletes these swimmers go against some of the best on the island.

Coach Neto, the boys’ swim coach, said the strength of this  season is teamwork. “We have swimmers who have been on the team for some time, a strong returning team helping the newcomers is what this program is really all about.” There are four upperclassmen, three seniors and one junior to help lead the team.

When asked about the challenges the team is facing, Coach Neto said very little. “We really have no problems and that is why I love coaching this team. The only challenge we have is speed and we can only get speed with time.”

Captain Dale Henderson is swimming his final year. “Every new season is a challenge, trying to fill the spots of those who graduated,” said Henderson, “But we always get a new class of swimmers and everyone brings something different to the team.” Last year the squad lost four seniors who have been replaced by seven freshmen.

Making the team cohesive is important with so many new swimmers,“The team is very welcoming,” said freshman Patrick Ilagan.

“I’ve learned a lot about leadership and teamwork,” said Gregory Kirkland, another freshman and one of the team’s fastest swimmers. “Everyone on the team is very friendly. It’s a great experience,” said Kirkland.

Curtis had four wins, three were won by forfeit the other was against Port Richmond.
