Warriors participate in International Peace Day

Curtis students participate in a peace summit that focused on the urgent need for peace.

On Friday September 19, the Curtis Warriors took on the United Nations. International Peace Day is an annual event that takes place on September 21; this year was the 30th anniversary. Since it fell on a Sunday this year, the event was held on Friday and seven Curtis students were chosen to attend. International Peace Day is a day to recognize peace, and the lack thereof in troubled countries. “Peace”, however, also describes personal peace or the troubles one individual might be facing.

At the conference this year, students from the Republic of the Congo attended via Skype. The conference itself lasted about four hours, and was broadcasted live online.

Prominent guests such as Dr. Jane Goodall and cellist Yo-yo Ma were also in attendance. The guests spoke about what peace means to them, what it means to the world, and what we can do to attain it.

Curtis Warrior  Yasmeen Adams took the floor for two minutes to share her personal story of what peace means to her, and why achieving peace is so important for our youth and the future. Students from schools around the world also shared their stories and opinions. These young speakers, Yasmeen among them, spoke with an urgency and vehemence that stressed the importance of peace and our future. Coming together with a shared passion for peace, every attendee at the United Nations Peace Conference celebrated a day that represents not only an idea, but a tangible goal for the future.
