Diplomats of health inform about healthy living

Myriad events create a healthy calender for interested students.

Since it opened last September, the Health Center and the Student Health Ambassadors have taken part in many fun and educational events for the school and community.

The Health Ambassadors are a student based club affiliated with the Health Center. They meet every Thursday in Ms. Rodriguez’s office, room 133 from 3-4 p.m.

Last year, the health center teamed up with the ambassadors to organize a pajama night for younger children. At the event, student health ambassadors read stories to the kids, had healthy snacks, and played games.

On September 30th, there was another event called “Change One Thing” which was held in the boys gym. The goal of this event was to get students to change one thing to make their lives healthier. The New York City food bank handed out healthy popcorn and dried fruits. Students were given free T-shirts if they posted a selfie with the hash tag #ChangeOneThing. Farmers from Snug Harbor also attended the event. They cooked kale soup, one vegetarian and one with turkey. Terrie Reed, a Curtis student who was at the event said, “I had like seven bowls of kale. It was so good and the event was really fun.”

This year the health ambassadors are planning another huge event, the Fall Family Festival. The event will be held during alumni week on October 25th from 11 to 5. The activities include a hoop shooting contest, performances by student and teacher bands, Zumba, and pumpkin picking for kids. NBA players are also expected to attend. Ms. Rodriguez, the health ambassador club advisor, said, “The activities will not only be fun but informative as well. I’m positive the students and families that attend will have a great time.”
